Lynx
Lynx
What is Lynx:
Lynx is an early communication program put out by Juniper Systems for all its early models to communicate with a PC or a laptop using a null modem cable.
What is Needed:
Null Modem Cable (Required for all Lynx communication configurations)
Serial to USB Cable (Required for PC's running Windows XP or later that do not have a serial port)
Procedure:
- Connect the handheld to the PC directly using a null modem cable or to the PC with a Serial to USB cable and a null modem cable (if you don't have a serial port). Always attach the cable to COM1 (right 9 pin port with the screen facing you).
- Then start up File Scout on the handheld unit (may say PC communication or something simular). Set the handheld aside now since all of the transfer functions are done on the PC.
- Start up Lynx on the PC, directly from your desktop or from one of our many PC applications.
- On the top left of the screen, is where the folders are displayed. Set the proper destination on the left, and the files in that folder are shown to you on the right. Normally, the destination folder does not change between uses unless you have more than one PC application and you go between them.
- Now click the connect button (right circular green arrows) at the left center of the screen. This will connect the handheld to the PC. You should see a 'Trying' message displayed until the connection is completed. After the connection is completed, you will see drive letters (A:, C:, S: on CX) displayed at the bottom left of the screen.
- Now double click on the C: icon at the bottom left, and folders on that drive are now displayed. Find the folder where your files are being kept (LOGS, CRUISE, GRADER, BUNDLE). Then click on it so that the contents of that folder are shown on the right.
- Next locate the files you want to upload. Click on the 1st one, then hold down the Ctrl key and click on all of the rest of the ones to be uploaded. All should be highlighted in blue. If you only see one highlighted, you didn't hold down the Ctrl key when making the selections.
- Once all of the files are highlighted, press the upward pointing arrow. This says the direction of the transfer is to the PC (and the downward pointing arrow sends information to the handheld).
- You will be asked to confirm overwriting existing files. Respond to each one at a time, or select Yes for All. The amount of time it takes to send files to the handheld depends on the amount of information, but normally it takes less than 30 seconds. You don't get a completion message when the transfer is done, but the scrolling progress bar does go away.
- Now click the icon at the right side of the middle of the screen (green circular arrows with a red bar through it). This disconnects the handheld unit from the PC. The bottom of the screen will be cleared out.
- Now disconnect the cable from the handheld unit.
- Finally, on the handheld, press Esc; and when asked if you want to exit, enter a Y and press Enter. You will be returned to your Application Menu.
Note: The installation procedure using one of Juniper Systems install disks will not properly load your PC with Lynx on Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. It will have to be copied from our download site and placed in the Programs Folder.
