Trimble Forestry's SOLO Forest is a handheld GIS mapping software application  that offers functionality, flexibility and the latest computing technology—all in a package that's compatible with virtually every GPS receiver and GIS file format. SOLO Forest lets you gather position and attribute data on a handheld computer such as the rugged Juniper Systems Allegro MX, Trimble Nomad, Trimble Recon or Trimble Ranger, or any other Windows Mobile or Windows CE device. Best of all, SOLO Forest provides advanced features for advanced users while remaining easy to learn and operate.  With a customizable toolbar using industry terms, the ability to track your progress throughout a stand, the capacity to generate custom grids in the field, SOLO Forest will save you valuable steps and time.

Key Features

  • Handy toolbar. You'll find SOLO Forest is easy to use because it incorporates the features, functions and terminology you already use. A handy forestry toolbar gives you easy access to commonly used forestry functions and map features. You can also customize toolbars for easy access to your favorite functions.
  • Track your progress. With SOLO Forest, you can make sure your field work is complete while you're still in the field. It is the only GIS mapping software that can interface with forest inventory software and open a form as you navigate to each sample plot. Once you've visited a plot, the point symbol changes. So it's easy to verify you've visited all the sample plots in the stand.

 

  • Custom grids. SOLO Forest is the only program out-of-the-box that lets you generate custom grids in the field. That means you can adjust for topography or other adverse conditions when you're in the field. You can generate grids in square, rectangular or hexagonal patterns, and SOLO Forest gives you flexible options for ordering index points.

 

  • Works with your instruments. SOLO Forest interacts with popular third-party forest inventory software and a variety of instrumentation. It also works with most common file formats. SOLO Forest works on any Windows Mobile or Windows CE compatible platform, and it's ideal for the TDS Ranger and Recon rugged handheld computers.

 

  • Complemented by Solo Office - Forest Edition . Gives you all of the functions that you have come to enjoy in SOLO Office with some additional tools useful to foresters. Enhancements in image preparation and feature code editing make office work a snap and let you get out to the field even faster.

Typical uses:

1)  Walk boundary lines to establish the property to be cruised.

2)  Determine acreage within the established boundary.

3)  Generate a cruise grid for plot and prism cruises.

4)  Mark important locations:  roads, skid trails, landings, wetlands, stream management zones, etc.

5)  Mark locations (plots / waypoints) where cruise samples were taken.

6)  Navigation in the field:  to find boundaries, important locations, waypoints.

7)  Upload information to an office GIS system to print out
